There’s an interesting dynamic at play in the 2012 POTUS GOP primary. Washington insiders apparently prefer an outsider and don’t much like the insiders. At least, not according to endorsements made by members of the House and Senate. Let’s take a look.
Mitt Romney – 61, Rick Perry – 14, Newt Gingrich – 8, Ron Paul – 3, Rick Santorum – 0
You could probably make the argument that Newt Gingrich is far more an insider than Rick Santorum, but I would argue Santorum just made his way onto the map in the past two weeks, which explains the discrepancy. But Mitt Romney and Rick Perry walk away with the lion share support of the establishment/Washington insiders.
Couple likely reasons for this. First, Newt Gingrich has very few friends in the House. Much of the House consists of members who booted him out back in the 90′s. Same can be said for Ron Paul. Paul doesn’t play the game in Washington and doesn’t cut deals for bills.
Love or hate Romney and Perry, they’ve lived a life outside the beltway. But maybe most members know/expect one of them to be the most likely nominee and they’re hedging their bets?
What say you?
